Dreamcast Emulator NullDC V1.0.4 R141 Plugins Bios Vmu (late
want to play your sega dreamcast games but dont want to haul the console out of the closet youre in luck, because there exists an outstanding emulator that i recently became addicted to: nulldc. this article covers all you need to know about it, including how to get started. so what are you waiting for soulcalibur is waiting.
nulldc requires directx 9.0c, visual c++ runtime libraries and optionally winpcap for modem emulation. bios files are also needed. it has a plugin architecture, with several alternative implementations (some ported from chankast ) for graphics, sound, reading games burned to cd-roms (it cannot read gd-roms directly) or disk image files, memory cards, etc.
version 1.0.4 is out now, including games such as strider, ultimate mortal kombat 3, gothic, gears of war, final fight 2 and duke nukem 3d, with many more games to come. the release adds support for the dreamcast vmu (playstation) and also adds a handful of new features including a function to convert soft-implemented sound and graphics effects from nulldc to nullaica using the gangan sound engine. gamepad support is back too.
version 1.0.3 of nulldc (released on august 20, 2008) features support for dreamcast vmu, allowing you to watch cd video content on the tv and listen to music in the background (not all discs are supported though). it also contains many other bugfixes and minor improvements. finally, the release contains support for gamepad, allowing you to use an analog stick, d-pad and four action buttons.
nullDC has the ability to support other emulators in the console that are not compatible with Dreamcast. For example, by using the multichip BIOS of another console, nullDC will load it. Unfortunately, there is no way that I know to download any of these other console emulators. If youre looking for other Dreamcast emulators, youll have to rely on Google or whatever else.
It should be stated that nullDC does support the GBC BIOS, so anything that is GBC compatible will load. What is GBC compatible is a little more subjective, but I would describe it as: everything except the arcade games.
Still, five years later, and not a week goes by without a new homebrew Dreamcast release. In fact, the latest to hit the scene was released mere hours ago. It is called NullDC, and it is a piece of software that is as close to perfect as you can get. How well it does against the original game consoles is up to you. The best way to describe the quality of the emulator is that it isnt bad. Rather, it is…slow.
There are a few more features that you get, such as the ability to play Dreamcast games for hours on end without any loss of quality as the programs continue running in the background, the ability to use a variety of controllers, the ability to emulate different types of USB keyboards/gamepads, custom key labels, and the ability to play video files in the background and play music and video files while the emulator is playing a game. Even more, it is compatible with Mac OS X, Linux, Android, and iOS. However, getting your hands on an original Dreamcast is still the best way of enjoying its classic games.
