in addition to the 30-band eq, its also possible to split the eq spectrum into additional high-pass and low-pass bands. the extra filters can be used to add reverb to the signal, or for an additional band-pass split. the filters can also be controlled by the modulation of the adsr control, the lfo, or the audio. other controls include input and output level, pan, input crossover, output crossover, boost, attenuation, the built-in limiter, expansion, saturation, and gain reduction. altogether, this makes for a very flexible and powerful eq. this includes two-band eqs. the two bands can also be narrow- or wide-band, or the separate high- and low-frequency bands can be narrow- or wide-band. the wide-band mode results in a band containing the highest frequencies (above 20 khz) in the narrow-band mode, and vice versa. the quality of the eq is excellent. the high pass band in particular has a great, smooth transition from 100 hz, and the low pass band a great, smooth transition from 20 khz. the eq is very easy to use, with a clear, simple user interface, and three different modes of operation. regardless of whether the eq is used in single-band, dual-band, or polymode, the user interface is very intuitive.

on the surface, the n5000 can look like a simple re-incarnation of the venerable digidesign n3000, but beneath the flashy appearance lies a wealth of features and modes not present on earlier models. for the most part, the front panel layout is intuitively laid out. five deck-controls (two for each channel) are arranged in ascending order, with all controls performing a positive function: tracks, sends, sub sends, effects send, pan. the down side of the manual-physical design is that that you have to reach out to the nearest keyboard to change the presets. also, its absence of digital i/o really limits its functionality and the replacement of that with a single analog input is pretty paltry. as with many sophisticated products, however, the n5000 has some hidden oomph, and we’re talking about its startling sonic capabilities. the first is its virtually infinite potential. digidesign offers a unique suite of usable plug-ins that are well integrated into the d-board. and the n5000 is a reference product, so the quality of the sound is more than acceptable. i can’t imagine that you could have spent more than $1500 for a board with the ability to do what it does.
