dts-hd master audio is a compression codec for digital storage, transmission and playback of high-quality audio. it is designed to reduce the amount of digital audio data needed for multimedia applications. in addition to the dts core which is a lossless compression of the original audio, dts-hd master audio also contains a residual stream of data which can be used to restore the original audio back to its original quality. dts-hd master audio uses a combination of lossy and lossless compression to reduce the amount of data used for storage and transmission. the original audio is compressed with a lossy dts core and the difference between the original audio and the compressed dts core is stored as a residual signal. the residual signal is compressed with a lossless encoder to further reduce the amount of data needed to store the residual signal.
