It is not always clear when a headphone amp is “balanced”, and when it is not, and this is a big failing in the market. This amp isn’t balanced, so be careful of that. It’s also quite small, and priced to within an inch of its life. If you want a portable amp with balanced pre-outs and analog inputs, then you will need to look elsewhere. But this is a stunning little amp that packs a lot of punch in a small package. And what’s more, is that it has integrated volume controls – with separate controls for each output. This is great for those of you who like to have a little bit of control over the volume of your headphones. Our only criticism is that the switches are a little fiddly. But that’s really to be expected for such a tiny amp. What we really love about this amp is its noise-reduction capabilities. It really washes out distortion, and raises the quality of the music. This is an amazing little amp that does a great job of making your headphones sound their very best. And if you want to add a little more oomph to your headphones, this is the one to get.

I love audio, but part of me feels like audio is so obsessed with listening to music on headphones that the only time people listen to music these days is on their headphones. This, in turn, only seems to reinforce that people listen to a lot of music on the iDevice on their headphones! But only if it’s done through a DAC. The amp route, of course, is an excellent method – especially if you can figure out a way to get a wire out of a wall socket.

Our heads-down approach to choosing headphones is meant to focus on other aspects. But here, we have to admit that we probably aren’t doing it correctly. For us, at least, the biggest thing that makes IEMs so great is the clarity of their mid-range and treble. It’s not just the upper frequencies, which are obviously the most important for a loud and engaging sound. It’s the whole sound, and without them, your music simply sounds a bit too muffled. The other thing we’ve noticed about IEMs is that there’s a lot of variation – some will provide really transparent, inspiring sound, some will be a bit more detailed and detailed. We think that, when you’re trying to choose between sound quality and portability, the latter is really the winner here. Our thoughts, then, tend to favor headphones such as the Bowers & Wilkins P5 and the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900. Its really the only pair we would consider purchasing. But if you can afford two, the Sennheiser HD800 is another model we think is essential. It sats so well at providing detail, but with the best possible tonal balance.

some modules (e.g. snd_ac97_codec and snd_hda_intel) can power off your sound card when it is not used. this can make an audible noise (like a crack/pop/scratch) when turning on/off your sound card. sometimes even when moving the volume slider or opening and closing windows (kde4). if you find this annoying, try modinfo your_module and look for a module option that adjusts or disables this feature.
in alsamixer, make sure that all the volume levels are up under recording, and that capture is toggled active on the microphone (e.g. mic, internal mic) and/or on capture (in alsamixer, select these items and press space). try making positive mic boost and raising capture and digital levels higher; this may make static or distortion, but then you can adjust them back down once you are hearing something when you record

the usb audio player pro plugin offers controls for the internal audio mute, volume and gain. these controls work just as expected, but do not match the standard controls of your av interface or mixer. if you wish to adjust the volume of the device, you will need to use the av interface or mixer.
