The acute response of the respiratory system to induced upper airway obstruction was studied in 21 awake adult rats. Animals were anesthetized and ventilated for mechanical ventilation. Fractional inspired oxygen (FI0(2)) and respiratory rate were maintained at 1.0 and 60 breaths/min, respectively. At the end of this period, pulmonary resistance (RL) and peak pressure (Ppeak) were measured during an inspiration of 0.0 and 20.0 ml. The same measurements were repeated in the same animals during a similar inspiratory maneuver, but preceded by an application of saline or a solution of gum arabic. Data were analyzed by linear regression. The obstructions elicited a significant increase in RL without modification of Ppeak. A further increase of the TL (thorax length) was observed in animals with saline solution (2.8 +/- 0.2 vs. 4.0 +/- 0.3 vs. 4.4 +/- 0.3 cm) while in animals with gum arabic it was significantly smaller (1.7 +/- 0.1 vs. 2.8 +/- 0.2 vs. 2.4 +/- 0.3 cm).Q:
