I have a question about how you should deal with or deal with a problem in regards to using transactions. I want to make sure I get the basics right. Lets say a user clicks a button with an transaction in it to delete an item on a sales page.
So the process of the transaction is:
1. User clicks button with transaction
2. User types in their item and item number
3. user clicks submit
4. System generates transaction id for approval in database
5. User click approve
6. System creates product on sales page
7. User click delete
8. System destroys product
9. Delete transaction id
10. System redirects user to product page.
If user did not delete the item during the transaction window they should not be redirected. If they did not delete the item they should see a blank page instead of the item page.
If the user deletes the item outside of the transaction then it should be fine, assuming there are no other user-visible side effects in the transaction.
In cases like this, simply create a “void transaction” transaction. I haven’t tried this myself, but have heard that this is how it is done. There could be a downside as it will close your transaction which won’t take effect for whatever action follows.
I would suggest the following:
1) If the user performs any other action in the transaction (e.g., confirms subscription), display a message confirming this action.
2) If the user successfully confirms the subscription,
a) save the transaction id and insert it into another table indicating it was successfully completed or cancelled, and
b) redirect the user.
3) If the user cancels the transaction, take the following actions:
a) rollback the transaction so that the system returns the user to the previous screen
b) delete the transaction id from the table and
c) log that the transaction
