The best free AutoCAD alternative, as of September 2019, is the free Basic Graphics Suite (BGS) application, which is available for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux.
AutoCAD is a mature and stable commercial application that comes with an impressive feature set, robust documentation, and a growing community of users and developers. That said, AutoCAD has experienced a number of slowdowns and feature drops over the years and some usability issues, such as the release of the latest minor version, AutoCAD 2019.
Users of older versions can downgrade to a previous major release, for example AutoCAD 2017, 2016, or 2015, which are more stable than AutoCAD 2019.

This section describes the core components of the Autodesk 2018 2D R15 (also referred to as Release 15) version of the AutoCAD application. AutoCAD 2018 supports Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems. It is the successor of Autodesk 2017 and Autodesk 2016.
The latest version of AutoCAD, Autodesk 2018, is a major release, in terms of being feature complete and stable. However, with a new release comes a new product name. AutoCAD is now known as Autodesk AutoCAD and,

All of AutoCAD’s functionality is defined by files called models. A model consists of blocks and components, each of which can have many functions. A block is the core component of a drawing.
Each block is defined by either the model that contains it, or in the model file itself. This process is called block definitions. Blocks are described by the properties of their functions, the parameters they expect, and the position of their anchor points and mirror images. Each of these properties is called a block parameter. These parameters may contain default values, or the values from the last command. If the parameter is left blank, the last command’s value will be used.
AutoCAD has a number of different ways to lay out objects and blocks. These include, but are not limited to, 2D, 3D, and perspective (or orthogonal) layout modes. The user can access the layout modes that are currently available in the current drawing by right-clicking an object and selecting “Layout Modes.” The user can then select a layout mode and drag the blocks that define the object around until it fits in the desired layout. The layouts that are available to the user can be set at the folder level. The layouts will be reset on every opening of a new drawing, but the user may set them to an individual folder. This folder is known as a “Layouts folder” or “Layout Manager folder” and is available through the Menu button on the Draw toolbar. The current drawing’s folder is known as the “Active Folder”.
Rasters, grids and layer
An important concept in AutoCAD is that of a raster. In the raster model, all objects are laid out in a two-dimensional space that is bounded on all four sides by lines. These lines are known as the raster. As the user interacts with the objects, the drawing is divided into discrete “tiles” of the raster, where the objects are laid out at a small scale. Each tile represents a distinct part of the object and can be thought of as a small sample of the object. Each tile has a unique, colored, background called a grid. Each grid consists of a colored background with a grid of lines drawn at various scales. This allows the user to see the boundaries of the tile more clearly. If a large-scale grid is required, for example, to see objects that are far away, it is drawn before each tile. This is similar

What’s New in the?
It’s the easiest way to make changes to your designs, thanks to feedback features like Import from File, Auto-Updating Checklist Status, and Auto-Updating Checklist Progress.
You can add custom reminders to your drawings based on a data source like a schedule, bug tracker, or progress milestone.
The Reminders dialog lets you see any related drawings, notes, and tasks from anywhere in the system. You can create new reminders from the Reminders dialog, or from any drawing.
Rapidly switch between revisions and capture comments about each revision to speed up reviews and approvals. (video: 1:18 min.)
Revision History lets you create custom views of your revision history and toggle comments between drawings and/or revisions.
Add and edit basic geometric dimensions or annotations directly in the annotation area, with no additional steps.
Create the types of annotations you want with a range of formatting options, including custom line thickness and colors.
Auto-Updating Checklist Status:
Keep your teams and projects on schedule with a list of all the items you need to check off, right in your drawings.
When you add items to your checklist, they’re automatically added to the related drawings and labeled with a checklist icon. You can drag an icon to the drawing canvas and click to select a marker.
Add or select an item from the list and press Enter to check it off, edit the marker, or toggle the status of a completed item. Or, you can quickly click to select multiple items to check off.
The Auto-Updating Checklist Status dialog includes information about the drawings and the status of the items in your checklist, so you can find all the drawings and items you need quickly and easily.
Auto-Updating Checklist Progress:
Improve team communication by sharing progress reports on items in your checklist.
As you check items off, you see a progress bar on all the items in your list that you check off.
You can click to check off multiple items at once, and click to toggle the progress of each item. You can also click to select a marker to apply a progress level or comment to the item.
