What is AutoCAD?
In layman’s terms, AutoCAD is a powerful drawing program which can be used to create and modify 2D and 3D drawings. AutoCAD is usually used for architectural, engineering, and industrial design work. AutoCAD comes with a native 2D drafting tool, but in many cases, you must purchase one of the many compatible CAD tools that are available for use with AutoCAD, such as MicroStation.
An Autodesk project typically begins when an architect sends a 3D drawing and a blueprint to a draftsman. The draftsman will then use the blueprint to transfer a rough draft of the design to a traditional paper drafting tool (such as drafting paper, drafting C-Marks, or a whiteboard). The architect will then review the design, and make any changes to the drawing before it is sent to the builder.
What are AutoCAD Applications?
There are many types of AutoCAD applications. With AutoCAD, you can create a wide variety of 2D and 3D drawings, including architecture, engineering, or interior design. The following is a list of general types of AutoCAD applications:
AutoCAD Free (Latest)
AutoCAD supports multi-viewports. This allows the creation of a single model and the simultaneous viewing of it in multiple, independent 3D viewpoints. This provides a much more efficient way of creating 3D models. For example, a single drawing may be presented in several views from the camera’s eye level to the most detailed perspective. The model may also be viewed from the side, top, or the 3D (Z) axis. The creation of models can be sped up by using the modeling features.
The AutoCAD 2D drawing object has support for basic 3D objects, such as points, lines, and arcs, that can be rotated in three dimensions. These components can be organized in a 3D modeling environment known as blocklists. For example, a building may be represented by a collection of 3D objects, such as walls, roofs, or support beams. Each object in a blocklist will be 3D, allowing for 3D viewing, including shading, of all the objects in a single model. The final rendering can also be provided as separate layers, which can be viewed in different perspectives. An alternative rendering, known as texture mapping, creates textures, which can be mapped to various surfaces of a model.
AutoCAD supports various methods of building 3D models, including:
Dynamic Blocklists that are models made of blocks. This allows the model to grow and shrink based on user preferences. The blocks are set on the 3D view by clicking with the left mouse button on the desired position.
Blocklists that are made up of only selected or simple blocks, for example, only lines, circles, and rectangles. For example, a house may be a collection of 3D line objects. When the user selects the lines, the house will be displayed as 3D, although only lines are 3D objects.
Blocklists that are made up of complex blocks, for example, the surfaces of a real object. For example, a car would be a collection of 3D blocks representing the hood, roof, trunk, and fenders.
Geometric and parametric models that are made of basic objects such as circles, rectangles, and line segments. The user can select the objects, and the objects are automatically transformed. When a shape is modified, its three dimensions, width, length, and height, are automatically calculated.

A couple of points in regards to the key:
According to Autodesk’s support forums, you will need to have your users activate the key from within their AutoCAD session. This is a known problem.
If you distribute the key to users, you must do so electronically. E-mail is the preferred method, as all versions of AutoCAD (v16, v17, etc) have been known to automatically block unapproved keys from being used.
I’ve also encountered this when trying to provide support for an application.
I ended up having to write a script that would send an email to the users, with a link to the application to activate the key. It works very well.
